LECTURES

WEEK 1

All lectures are held via Microsoft Teams. In the first week, we formed groups to deliver online presentations regarding different types of infographics.

7 infographic types:

Here is the short summary of the 7 infographic types:

1. List Infographic

Purpose: Summarizes a collection of tips, items, or reasons.

Example: 5 Ways to Improve Productivity.

2. Statistical Infographic

Purpose: Focuses on data, charts, and big numbers.

Example: A report on global smartphone usage percentages.

3. Timeline Infographic

Purpose: Shows a chronological sequence of events.

Example: The history of the internet from 1990 to today.

4. How-To (Process) Infographic

Purpose: Explains a linear, step-by-step instruction manual.

Example: Steps to set up a home office.

5. Comparison Infographic

Purpose: Shows the differences/similarities between two things.

Example: Working from Home vs. Working in an Office.

6. Flowchart Infographic

Purpose: Guides the reader through a decision-making process.

Example: "Is it time for a new car? Yes/No path.

7. Map or Location Infographic

Purpose: Visualizes data specific to a location or region.

Example: A map showing the most popular tourist spots in Europe.

WEEK 2

In this week, we learned about what is 'L A T C H', which is a concept tool that describes the way to organize data.

L: location

A: alphabet

T: time

C: category

H: hierarchy

We had a group exercise during lectures.

We also asked to finish a kinetic typography exercise in group

WEEK 3

CNY WEEK-ONLINE RECORDED CLASS

  • learned how to create animation chart
  • announcement of project 2(exercise 1)

WEEK 4

In this week, we learned what is 'Miller's Law' and 'Chunking'

George A. Miller’s idea, known as Miller’s Law, says that most people can only remember about 7 things (plus or minus 2) in their short-term memory at one time.

That’s why “chunking” is important. Chunking means grouping small pieces of information into bigger, simpler units.

We aksed to create presentation of this topic

EXERCISES

WEEK 1

We also had our first tutorial class this week. We did a group exercise where we learned what makes an infographic "good" or "bad" based on design principles.

EXERCISE 1-QUALIFY DATA(10%)

In week 2, we required to qualify and visualize data on paper on week 2.

I selected small everyday item--beads, and I arranged them based on specific indicators like quantity, category, or size. I also labeled the relevant information using handwritten indicators to make the data clearer and easier to understand.

I took almost 2 days to complete it.(includes times to buy items and placing the items..)

Grouping them

final visual assembly

EXERCISE 2-LATCH(10%)

We required to do LATCH Poster exercise on week 3.

For this exercise, I was required to organize a group of information into a visual poster using at least four principles from the LATCH system (Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, Hierarchy).

I chose Pokémon as my topic because it contains rich, structured information such as types and evolution stages

I used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to complete the poster. Illustrator was mainly used to create clean vector graphics and custom icons. And Photoshop was used for layout refinement, color adjustment, filter and texture and final composition.

FLIP CLASS AND PRESENTATION

FLIP CLASS 1-Redesign poster

We also required to re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster with CANVA.
And I found the poor infographic poster in Instagram.

My redesign version.

I used grid guidelines in Canva to ensure that everything was perfectly aligned and the layout stayed organized. I also used that grid guidelines to make sure the spaces between my items were even.

Besides, I added several graphic elements to make the overall design more visually engaging.

FLIP CLASS 2-LATCH

We worked on 'LATCH' presentation slide and we understood better after doing this.
