Experiences
Design Research Methodology is a module I had never encountered before, making it a fresh and interesting experience for me. For my task 1, I prepared a research proposal focusing on the role of visual elements in education which lead to evaluating the importance of these element in studying. In this whole task, I investigated the role of comics in education and assessed how their visual elements influence student learning, engagement, and critical thinking skills. My research questions centered on understanding how comics impact student motivation and identifying which visual elements in comics add educational value.
For Task 2, I conducted a critical review, which sharpened my analytical skills as I examined various literature sources to support my topic. Task 3 involved collecting primary data through a form survey, where 80 students provided responses on the topic: Evaluating the Potential of Visual Elements in Comics in Enhancing Student Engagement in Studying. This hands-on approach allowed me to directly interact with data and interpret students' perspectives, making the research process both challenging and rewarding.
Observations
Throughout the module, I gained valuable insights by observing examples provided by Ms. Jinchi and my classmates. Ms. Jinchi’s examples were incredibly helpful, and most of them came from seniors, serving as models for us to reference. Additionally, observing my classmates’ work and presentations within the same section gave me a broader understanding of diverse research approaches and methodologies. These observations enriched my learning experience, highlighting how different perspectives and creative approaches can lead to unique outcomes. By reflecting on these examples, I could refine my own work and understand how to align my research objectives with practical execution.
Findings
In this module, I found that I improved my research and critical thinking skills from task 1 to task 3, and owing to Miss Jinchi’s feedback. Overall, this module has been a rewarding experience, filled with both challenges and moments of growth. It pushed me to expand my skills beyond just design, helping me develop critical thinking and research abilities. I was able to sharpen my ability to analyze and evaluate information, as well as learn how to effectively present and defend my perspective. While the process of collecting insights, interpreting data, and analyzing the responses required a great deal of effort, it was incredibly fulfilling.
In conclusion, this module has helped me realize the importance of blending creativity with research. It has provided me with a deeper understanding of how visual elements can enhance learning, and I now feel more confident in conducting research and using design to communicate ideas effectively. The experience was challenging yet incredibly rewarding, and it has given me valuable skills that will serve me well in future projects.
