Task 1
Objective: to explore the various design principles taught in the module and
observe works of design to apply our knowledge.
Design Principles
Gestalt Theory: an approach or idea that emphasizes how people perceive visuals and wholes rather than just individual parts
fig 1.1 gestalt theory example
Contrast: the use of opposing elements such as color, shape, size or texture, to create visual interest and emphasize content
fig 1.2 contrast example
Balance: visual distribution of elements to create stability and harmony, achieved through symmetrical and asymmetrical
fig 1.3 balance example
Emphasis: to creating a focal point by making a specific element stand out through color, shapes, size, or value
Repetition: using the same elements consistently to reinforce the theme and enhance the visual rhythm
fig 1.5 repetition example
Movement: to guide the viewer’s eye through a composition using lines, shapes, colors, or patterns to create a sense of direction and flow
fig 1.6 movement example
Harmony: elements complement each other through similarity in color, shape, texture, or style to create a visually pleasing composition
fig 1.7 harmony example
Unity: elements work together cohesively, giving a sense of completeness and consistency, even if they are different in form or style
fig 1.8 unity example
In short, harmony is about visual compatibility, while unity is about overall coherence.
Symbol: visual representation of an idea, object, or concept
eg: light bulb represents idea
fig 1.9 symbol example

Hari & Deepti, a talented husband-and-wife duo from Mumbai, creates stunning works of art using cut and layered paper. Their unique style brings intricate narratives to life, illuminated with soft LED lights that add a dreamy, almost magical quality to their work. This particular piece caught my eye because of its depth and warm color palette, glowing ambiance. The way they use light and shadow to enhance storytelling makes their work visually stunning, deeply emotional, and immersive.
Several design principles contribute to the compelling nature of this artwork:
Balance – The elements are arranged symmetrically, creating a sense of stability. The figures are positioned at the center, surrounded evenly by trees, making the composition feel well-grounded.
Repetition – The identical trees, consistently placed throughout the scene, create a rhythmic flow and a sense of unity that ties the whole piece together.
Emphasis – The small human figures in the middle naturally draw the viewer’s attention. Their contrast against the dense tree arrangement makes them the focal point of the composition.
Contrast – The striking difference between the dark silhouetted elements and the glowing orange background enhances the drama of the scene. The interplay of light and shadow makes the composition more engaging.
Depth and Layering – The use of multiple layers of paper gives the piece a three-dimensional effect. This makes the scene feel alive, as if one could step right into it.
Overall, Hari & Deepti’s work is a perfect blend of craftsmanship, storytelling, and innovative use of light. Their ability to transform simple paper into immersive, glowing landscapes is nothing short of magical.
